Hi there,
Michael and I were trying to think of the best Bend park + coffee combo this weekend, because our list is far too short. The goal: a coffee shop close enough to a park that you can actually drink it hot while the kids burn off some energy. Hit reply with your go-to park + coffee pairing and I'll share everyoneβs suggestions in this weekend's edition!
In this weekβs Loop:
Field guide to Bendβs youth-only (and recently stocked!) fishing pond
Meet an award-winning cartoonist and author at Roundabout books
Mural art, exploring Earth through Oreos and pudding, a new parent-child strength class, and more!
Letβs jump right in!

FIELD GUIDE
Shevlin Park Youth Fishing Pond

Photo courtesy of Bend Parks & Rec
This week is a great time to take a kid fishing for the first time! ODFW just stocked Shevlin Pond with nearly 1,000 rainbow trout, so the odds are really in your kiddoβs favor for landing a fish. It's youth-only (17 and under, plus those with disabilities), so you donβt have to stress about getting looks from anglers who feel like kids are the reason the fish arenβt biting.
Quick note on licenses: kids 11 and under fish free. Ages 12-17 need a juvenile angling license from ODFW. Daily limit is two fish, minimum eight inches.
Good to know: Free to enter & park. Restrooms are available. Bring your own water. Keep an eye on toddlers near the water's edge (thereβs no fence enclosing the pond).
Where it is: East side of Shevlin Park Road, beside Aspen Hall. Park in the north lot.
Make a day of it: After fishing, cross Shevlin Park Road and walk the Tumalo Creek trail. It's flat, shaded by old-growth ponderosa pines, and a completely different vibe from the open pond. There are some good creek splashing spots for warmer days, too!
More info: Fishing details at bendparksandrec.org. Stocking schedule at myodfw.com.
