Talking with kids

  • How to process what's happening and talk with your kids

I want to thank Katie London Miller, who is a reader and a therapist in Redmond, for offering this information to the BFL community about how to process what’s happening and how to talk to your children.

    1. Allow yourself time to process your own reaction. Your feelings are valid, no matter how you are responding. Allow yourself time to care for yourself and be gentle with yourself.
    2. Start by asking what they already know and have heard about the incident. Sometimes it helps to find a quiet moment, or to go on a walk and ask what your child has heard.
    3. Share an age appropriate amount of information. Use simple, honest language. Avoid graphic or unnecessary details. Say “I don't know” if you don't have the information or aren't sure how to answer a question.
    4. Listen and validate feelings. Remember: all feelings are valid. “It's ok to feel ____.” Or “It's ok if you aren't sure how to feel or don't have a reaction yet.” You can say, “I get that you feel scared, I do too.”
    5. If you share your feelings, share what you do to help yourself feel better. For example, take some deep breaths, hug a loved one, go for a walk, move your body.
    6. Focus on safety. “Your school/community/our family does a lot to keep you safe. Your school has locks and secure entrances.” Tangible facts.
    7. Limit access to the news. It's important to prescreen any news they may see and you can't prescreen things as you watch them the first time yourself. Make sure your children are in a safe place and out of listening or visual range before you take the time to watch or listen to the news. It's also ok for you to turn off the news and stay off social media for your own mental health too.
    8. Focus on regulation, connection and felt-safety. It's ok to play and laugh. It's good for your child to feel connected to you, their friends, and your community.
    9. Check back in. Children often process things in short chunks. You may get a comment here or there and that's all they can tolerate. You may notice a change in behavior without your child saying anything, and you may need to ask if they are thinking about it. You may see no observable change and still want to periodically ask and check in.
    10. Reach out for support. If you notice a change in your child (increased separation anxiety, changes in behavior, sleep or eating, or a change in physical complaints), please reach out for support. You can contact your school counselor or a behavioral health counselor at your child's doctor's office. They can provide short term support and help connect you to resources for longer support as needed.
    11. Ask for your own support. You deserve the same support and compassion you would offer to your child. Maybe that means a therapist, partner or trusted friend. Maybe it means a behavioral health consultant at your doctor's office. You deserve support too.
  • How to Talk to Children About Gun Violence
